Every community has a clothing design unique to it. Traditional, Ethnic, Historic or whatever you may want to call it, there is a diverse field to choose from the world over. For the Africans, the 'kanga' and 'kitenges' are a form of identification for women and in West Africa, free flowing robes are normally adorned by men.
In this part of the world, research shows that it is good for the child to be close to the parents - especially when he/she is a baby. With a baby carrier the parent, besides being close to the child, also gets more movable. And why complicate things? Do it as in Africa, carry your baby in African textiles: a kanga or kitenge.
In Tanzania they start to carry the baby to the breast as soon as the navel-string is gone, one to two weeks after the baby was born. Later on the child is carried either at the breast or at the back of the mother even as long as up till the age of five years.
In Tanzania they use both the kanga and the kitenge without any problems, but for those who are not so used, you can use the larger kitenge, so that you are sure to make a double knot.
