Nutters dont wear safety boots Just latelyI have found a big intrest in safety at work or maybe more to the point a lack of safety in the work place, this caught my attention when seeing the local bin man use his hand to push some bags into the giant man crushing claw machine on the wagon. This made me more aware of the perils of some folks work. I work in an office enviroment so face little danger other than a serious paper cut to the upper lip Dont get me wrong office junkies i know that can hurt like hell but losing an arm is more long term. Road workers are currently adding a extra lane to a roundabout near to my house so i see these guys daily risking thier lifes sitting in JCB buckets as a means of transport to the other side of a hellishly busy junction, Imagine if they got hit by a bus, the outcome wouldnt be very nice. none of the construction workers I noticed where wearing safety boots. Madness considering the job, Is it that people just become unconcerned for there safety through routine or through need to carry out there job with lack of proper safety precautions. I previously worked as a mechanic and i remember doing things unsafely just because older workers thought you where a "" if you couldnt do it the "manly way" looking back i was stupid to go along with it, On one ocassion i was under a four post lift that fell by about 8 inches my automatic reaction was to get out from under it asap and never return however my older work mate laughed and said you better get used to it working here. After some stick from the other lads we where back under the same lift with two bits of wood holding up a 2 tonne rolls royce. hmm yes alarm bells should have been ringing but as a novice in the trade i grew to accept this kind of attitude. Is this just my experience or is it wide spread? im guessing its quite normal. later that same year in the same garage a work mate lost a finger in that same lift, to be fair he was watching the local talent walk past and not paying attention to the job hence his new nick name "fingers mctottywatcher" still makes me laugh On a more serious note though people lose thier lifes everyday through probobly no fault of there own other than what is expected of them from there employers needs to meet targets and make money quickly. My advice to everyone is always wear the right clothing for the job, always pay attention to what you are doing, never be affraid to speak up for yourself if you feel something is wrong, DO NOT TAKE RISKS, you cannot put a value on life but you can put a value on correct workwear |
