How Do I Tie Dye?

I remember back in high school our art teacher having us make a tie dye shirt for a project. Mine came out looking like someone crapped color all over a white shirt. How is it that the tie dye shirts sold in stores look so well done? How can I end up trying to make a shirt look that great just using conventional means?
