Do I need to wear a "matched" suit to an interview?

Thank author of this post/commentI am interviewing for a position as a research scientist. Our normal workplace attire consists of khakis and a polo shirt. Do I need to wear a suit for the interview or will black slacks and a nice shirt do? If I wear black dress pants could I substitute a twin sweater set or a really nice red and black jacket for a matching suit jacket? I never wear a matching suit and would rather not buy one if it is not necessary.
